Product Notes
PERSONAL NOTE: We change the label every year to best suit the feeling I think the wine is giving. The photo for the 2017 vintage was taken by me (Craig) on a trip Carla and I made to the Northern Cape Province near Namibia. The image is of a Sociable Weavers nest. The nest can house up to 300 birds at a time and be decades old. We loved the birds and the nest and thought this was a very good label pairing for our latest Cortez vintage: because our wines respect all types of birds nests.
VIGNERON: Craig & Carla Hawkins
CELLAR LOCATION Bandits Kloof, Eendekuil, Piketberg, Swartland
(MICRO)CLIMATE: Mediterranean
TERROIR: (type of soil, exposition, altitude, Area), Decomposed Granite, North facing, 200m above sea level, from the Paardeberg.
VITICULTURE: Planted in 1972, dryland bush vine (un-trellised), farmed organically. The vineyard is a special one as it has been farmed organically since 2001 and every year, good or bad, gives a tension we sometimes don’t find in our other wines (as much). This I think is due to the high percentage of quartz/silica in the soil.
